Implementation
Community Empowerment & Infrastructure
The Community Empowerment Group
As outlined in the appropriate pillars, where the archeological, family and historical groups of the project seek to address the wrongs of the past, the pillars of this group concern the present, aiming to better the livelihoods of not only the five resident communities of the Codrington estate, but across Barbados. Investments will be made in local infrastructure, tenantry rights delivered, and opportunities will be created The key stakeholders within this group include the five communities of the Codrington estate, coordinated via the project’s community representatives and a local council of two from each of the five communities.
Impact & Vision
Through the sale of estate land to approved tenants, the Codrington communities will come to own the land they live upon; land settled by those emancipated from enslavement at the Codrington plantations. This will allow them to put down roots to be passed down to their own descendants. The executive group also seeks to establish a community Engagement Centre to conduct and ascertain social impact assessments and provide solutions in keeping with the methodology of co- curation and community engagement. Furthermore, as an ultimate vision and project legacy, the group is soon to unveil the ‘Codrington Trust Endowment Fund’ a much-needed charitable and business funding arm for local community education and local business growth via scholarships and flexible business loans – committing $XXX over a period of 5 years from mid-late 2025.
