About
Governance and Accountability
Our Guidance
To guide the project on its journey towards reparative justice, it is governed and advised by a range of bodies to ensure the work completed is done in a spirit of accountability, responsibility, commitment and respect to the victims of the past and the communities most impacted by this shameful history.
Executive Group
Composed of the executives and project managers of the Codrington Trust and USPG, the Executive Group holds ultimate responsibility for the design, delivery and implementation and review of project objectives and activities, as well as the representatives of both organisations trustee groups. The group is advised and directed by the project steering committee, and is responsible for reflecting the views of descendants and impacted communities in consultation with relevant advisory groups.
Steering Committee
Alongside three representatives each from the trustee groups of both partner organisations, the Committee includes three independent experts and two community representatives from the local community of St. John.
Community Council
To support and inform the work of the project community representatives, the project will see the appointment of a 10-person community-elected council, with two representatives from each of the Codrington estate’s five tenantries: College Land, Sargeant Street, College Savannah, Consett Bay and Society. This council will ensure the voice of the community is represented on the Steering Committee, reporting to the project’s community representatives.
Descendant Advisory Group
A core part of the project’s work will involve developing an international community of those descended from persons enslaved on the Codrington Estates. The Descendant Advisory Group exists to empower those persons within the project’s delivery and see that the voices of descendants lie at the core of the project’s work. Beginning with a small group of persons who have already mapped their ancestry to the Codrington estates, the project team will work to expand and empower this group throughout the first years of its operation.
